U.S. JGOFS Process Studies
U.S. JGOFS plans called for the deployment of moored arrays and
detailed cruise operations in well-defined boxes at strategic
oceanic locations. These experiments were to be designed to better
parameterize the functions which describe ocean biogeochemical
processes, and permit their incorporation into numerical models.
Components
The North Atlantic
Bloom Experiment or NABE
- occured during 1989, at approximately 20°W, where researchers
aboard two ships, the R/V Atlantis II and the Endeavor
made scientific measurements.
The Equatorial
Pacific Project or EqPac
- focused its efforts in 1992 along 140°W.
The Arabian Sea
Process Study
- began late in 1994 and continued until January of 1996, this
effort consisted of approximately 17 cruises aboard the R/V
Thomas Thompson based from Muscat, Oman.
Southern Ocean
Process Study
- began late in August of 1996 with a Transit and then, a Site
Survey cruise, this intensive effort will continue through April
of 1998 using first, the R.V. Nathanial B. Palmer and then,
the R.V. Roger Revelle.
Planning report for a North Atlantic basin scale experiment
- - a report was published but funding limitations prevented
the implementation of this study.
