U.S. JGOFS Process Studies

_____________________

U.S. JGOFS plans called for the deployment of moored arrays and detailed cruise operations in well-defined boxes at strategic oceanic locations. These experiments were to be designed to better parameterize the functions which describe ocean biogeochemical processes, and permit their incorporation into numerical models.

Components

o The North Atlantic Bloom Experiment or NABE
occured during 1989, at approximately 20°W, where researchers aboard two ships, the R/V Atlantis II and the Endeavor made scientific measurements.
o The Equatorial Pacific Project or EqPac
focused its efforts in 1992 along 140°W.
o The Arabian Sea Process Study
began late in 1994 and continued until January of 1996, this effort consisted of approximately 17 cruises aboard the R/V Thomas Thompson based from Muscat, Oman.
o Southern Ocean Process Study
began late in August of 1996 with a Transit and then, a Site Survey cruise, this intensive effort will continue through April of 1998 using first, the R.V. Nathanial B. Palmer and then, the R.V. Roger Revelle.
o Planning report for a North Atlantic basin scale experiment
- a report was published but funding limitations prevented the implementation of this study.
