CALL FOR PAPERS FOR A DEEP-SEA RESEARCH PART II SPECIAL ISSUE ON
Views of Ocean Processes from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view
Sensor (SeaWiFS) Mission ******************************************************************
Dear Colleague,
We would like to announce a call for papers for a special issue
of Deep-Sea Research Part II (DSR-II) on the application of SeaWiFS
imagery for examining ocean processes. The SeaWiFS mission has been
operational for four years now and its data have provided unprecedented
depictions of the ocean biosphere and biogeochemical processes.
It seems that the time is now ripe for the publication of a special
issue on the oceanographic application of SeaWiFS data.
The theme of the special issue will be on the application of SeaWiFS
imagery to the understanding of ocean phenomena on local- to-global
scales. Contributions to the special issue should be focused on
how SeaWiFS data can be used to understand ocean biological, biogeochemical,
physical and/or geological processes. Manuscripts that are focused
on calibration/validation issues or satellite algorithms in general
will not be viewed favorably (unless it demonstrates a utility for
understanding oceanic processes).
We plan to publish a CD-ROM with the special issue. The intent is
to provide the ability to publish animated visualizations of SeaWiFS
or supplemental information (such as computer codes). We would like
to limit the types of multimedia items included on the CD-ROM to
those that can be viewed with a standard web browser with appropriate
plug-ins. Data and/or visualizations to be published on the CD-ROM
need to be included with the initial manuscript submission.
We are requiring authors to prepare a letter of intent to assess
suitability of the submission and to facilitate communication among
the submitting authors. Letters of intent will be available to all
authors via the World Wide Web.
Letters of intent will be due (via email to dsr2@seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov)
by Feb. 1, 2002. Multiple submissions will require multiple letters
of intent.
The letter of intent must include:
1) working title
2) author list
3) contact information (including email)
4) interest in the companion CD-ROM, and
5) a short abstract describing the work (1/2 page max).
Manuscripts will be due May 1, 2002 and all submitted manuscripts
must be in final form. It is expected that the special issue would
be published in the following year. Further information concerning
the preparation of manuscripts can be found at www.elsevier.com/inca/publications/store/1/1/6/116.pub.istaut.shtml
Five copies of the manuscript should be submitted to:

The co-guest editors for the special issues are David Siegel (UCSB),
John Marra (LDEO), and Andrew Thomas (UMaine). Elaine Firestone
(GSFC) will serve as the document manager. Further questions about
the special issue can be addressed to Dave Siegel (davey@icess.ucsb.edu).
Thank you for your interest,
