Subject: REMINDER: OCEANS Open Science Conference

Third Announcement and call for abstracts

Abstract and early registration deadline: NOW 31 October 2002
OCEANS: Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems Analysis International Open Science Conference January 7-10, 2003, Paris.

This conference has been designed to obtain input from the scientific community into the development of a new ten-year international SCOR/IGBP research project. This project will focus on integrated studies of biogeochemistry and ecosystem dynamics in the ocean in the context of the Earth System and global change. Questions to seed discussion include:

*How does global change, represented by changes in natural climatic modalities and anthropogenic forcings, impact marine biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem dynamics? *How do these impacts alter the mechanistic relationship between elemental cycling and ecosystem dynamics?
*What are the feedback mechanisms to the Earth System from these changes?

In addition to plenary and poster presentations, there will be two full days of working group discussions. Abstracts are invited for poster presentations on themes such as: trace elements in ecological and biogeochemical processes, physical forcing of biogeochemical cycling and marine food webs, climatic modulation of organic matter fluxes, direct effects of anthropogenic CO2 on biogeochemical cycles and ecosystems, integrating food web dynamics from end to end, continental margins, the mesopelagic layer, biogeochemical hotspots, choke points, triggers, switches and non-linear responses, feedbacks to the Earth System , coupled models of biogeochemical cycles and ecosystems. There are two important background documents on the website on which we invite your comment either during the working group discussions or by email prior to the conference. E mail comments for inclusion in discussions at the conference are welcome if you are unable to attend the conference in person.Email comments will be introduced to the working group discussions during the conference so that your input can be included in the development of the OCEANS project.

For the full programme, background documents and registration details visit our website http://www.igbp.kva.se/obe/ or send an E mail to: scor@dmv.com We encourage you to circulate this information to interested colleagues.
