Open Session on Biogeochemistry of the Ocean Carbon Cycle
Please
note that there will be an "Open Session on Biogeochemistry of the
Ocean Carbon Cycle" (session OS-10) at the forthcoming Joint Assembly
of the EGS and AGU in Nice, 6-11 April, 2003. ..................................................................
OS-10: Open Session on Biogeochemistry of the Ocean Carbon Cycle
Convener: Mick Follows (mick@mit.edu) Co-convener: Wolfgang Koeve
(w.koeve@web.de)
Session Details: We will discuss current understanding of the biogeochemistry
of the ocean carbon cycle and its relationship to ocean circulation
and climate. Recent studies emp hasize the control on the biological
pumps of carbon by multiple nutrients, incl uding nitrogen, phosphorus,
silica, calcium and iron, and the coupling of the cycles of these
element. What are the oceanic processes and feedbacks which control
the availability and nutrients and the fluxes of carbon? How are
these elements coupled within the ocean biogeochemical system and
in which processes are the y decoupled? How are these processes
related to ocean circulation and changes in climate on interannual
timescales and beyond. We encourage contributions which throw new
light on the processes which control the distributions, fluxes and
coupling of carbon and nutrients in the oceans, and the interaction
of these processes with climate variability. This includes stu dies
concerning the origins and fate of organic matter in the water column,
the transport of biogeochemical tracers in the oceans, and their
fluxes across the air-sea interface. We welcome studies highlighting
new data, the interpretation and synthesis of existing time-series'
and large scale surveys, and conceptual and numerical models.
