Post-Doc Positions: RSMAS
Research
Associate (Postdoctoral) (Position 005-517). The College of Oceanic
and Atmospheric Sciences (COAS), Oregon State University (OSU),
invites applications for a full-time, fixed-term, annual appointment
funded by grant and contract funds. As part of the NASA carbon cycle
program and ONR/NOPP Paradigm project, we are developing coupled
physical/biological models of the North Pacific Ocean. We are especially
interested in the ocean carbon cycle on seasonal to interannual
time scales. We seek a person who will actively collaborate with
our interdisciplinary team of researchers. This position requires
the design, implementation, and testing of one and three-dimensional
models of the coupled physics and biology of the ocean and comparison
with observations. Data assimilation techniques are used to estimate
model errors and parameters, and a wide variety of visualization
tools are used to study model output. The position requires publication
in the scientific literature and participation in science team meetings.
The successful applicant should have a PhD in oceanography or other
relevant Earth science. Extensive experience in numerical modeling
is required. Applicants must have experience with coupled models
and plankton processes, and experience with data assimilation is
helpful. Applicants should have excellent communication and presentation
skills. Applicants must be able to work independently and integrate
efforts with a larger research team, and be willing to travel and
participate in oceanographic research meetings. Salary: $38,000-$41,000.
Send statement of interest, curriculum vitae and name, address,
phone number, and e-mail address of three references to: Dr. Y.H.
Spitz, COAS, 104 Ocean Admin, OSU, Corvallis, OR 97331-5503. Questions
about the position may be directed to Yvette Spitz or Mark Abbott
by phone (541-737-3227; 541-737-4045), FAX (541-737-2064), or by
electronic mail (yvette@coas.oregonstate.edu; mark@coas.oregonstate.edu).

Sciences at Oregon State University can be found at http://www.coas.oregonstate.edu.
For full consideration apply by 5/15/02. ***********************************************************
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (Position 005-516). The College of Oceanic
and Atmospheric Sciences (COAS) at Oregon State University (OSU)
invites applications for a full-time, fixed term, Research Associate
(Postdoctoral) position. The successful applicant will conduct research
related to the circulation in the nearshore zone of the ocean (defined
by water depths less than 10m) and the associated variability of
the bathymetry, with particular emphasis on the temporal (over O
(mins)) and spatial (over O (100m)) variability of the coupled system
involving waves, currents and sediment transport. Research will
involve the planning, implementation, and analysis of numerical
model experiments and the use of laboratory and field data to test
and improve the predictions. The position is funded through grants
from the Office of Naval Research and the National Oceanographic
Partnership Program (NOPP). Qualifications: Ph.D. in physical oceanography,
physics, applied mathematics, mechanical, civil, coastal or ocean
engineering, or related field; experience in theoretical and/or
numerical modeling studies of fluid/sediment dynamics problems (however,
individuals with related field or laboratory experience who would
like to broaden their capabilities to include numerical modeling
are encouraged to apply); experience in Unix systems and Fortran
programming; experience in the analysis of nearshore data sets is
highly desirable; proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
Salary: $38,000-$42,000. Send statement of interest, curriculum
vitae and name, address, phone number and electronic mail address
of three references to: Dr. H. T. Özkan-Haller, COAS, 104 Ocean
Admin, OSU, Corvallis, OR 97331-5503. For full consideration, apply
by 4/12/02. Questions about the position may be directed to Dr.
Özkan-Haller by telephone (541-737-9170), Fax (541-737-2064), or
by e-mail (ozkan@coas.oregonstate.edu). Further information about
COAS can be found at http://www.coas.oregonstate.edu.
OSU is an AA/EO.
