U.S. SOLAS Workshop Invitation
Dear
JGOFS colleagues,
Attached
is an announcement for a planning workshop of the US Surface Ocean
Lower Atmosphere Study (US SOLAS) which will be held from May 16-18,
2001 at the Bolger Center in Potomac MD. We hope to formulate a
US science plan and discuss the natural synergies between the US
SOLAS effort and other planning endeavors. We hope that many of
you will be able to participate in the workshop and share your expertise
in upper ocean biogeochemical cycling and fluxes . Don't hesitate
to contact me at ussolas@aoml.noaa.gov and/or peruse the USSOLA
web page for more information (www.aoml.noaa.gov/ocd/solas).

care, Rik Wanninkhof

Dear
Colleague,
We
are pleased to announce a planning workshop for a new research initiative,
the US component of the Surface Ocean Lower Atmosphere Study (US
SOLAS). The meeting will be held at the Bolger Center in Potomac,
MD (http://www.bolgercenter.com/) from May 16 through 18, 2001.
Most out of town participants will arrive on the evening of May
15 for an early start on the 16th. The meeting will run through
Friday mid-afternoon (3 PM). The conference center is within 45
minutes of the DC area airports. Meeting coordination will take
place through UCAR and meeting logistics is appended. All prospective
participants should make arrangements through UCAR. There is limited
space in conference hall and breakout rooms such that there will
be "first come, first serve" capacity control. The workshop will
be structured around several interrelated fundamental science issues
in ocean/atmosphere biogeochemical coupling:
* The
Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Sulfur Cycle
* Radiation and Photochemistry in the Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere
* Boundary Layer Dynamics of CO2 and other climate relevant gases
* Atmospheric Connections with the Marine Nitrogen Cycle
* Boundary Layer Physics
Through discussions in the five science issue areas above, the overall
objectives of the workshop will be to:
* Summarize recent advances in quantifying fluxes of climate relevant
compounds (CRCs) in the Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere region.
* Identify critical and addressable knowledge gaps to predict future
concentrations of CRCs in the lower marine atmosphere.
* Prioritize which inter- and multi-disciplinary studies will further
our understanding of controls on the concentrations and fluxes of
CRCs in this boundary region.
* Further the development of a US science plan for study of the
SOLA region and evaluate how such an effort would interface with
other national and international science initiatives such as the
U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Plan (CCSP), the IGBP International Global
Atmospheric Chemistry (IGAC) project and the international SOLAS.
Community input and support is critical for this program.
For
those who can and cannot attend, we will also actively solicit written
input on US SOLAS prior to the meeting via E-mail and www. This
mechanism was very well received in the OCTET planning effort and
brought forth many good ideas. To become more familiar with the
overall science objectives we encourage you to peruse the SOLAS
web page and the US SOLAS web site, see http://www.ifm.uni-kiel.de/ch/solas/main.html
and http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/ocd/solas/,
respectively. The former includes the SOLAS science plan and latter
contains the planning meeting proposal. We are looking forward to
hearing from you and seeing you at the Bolger Center in May. Please
don't hesitate to contact any of us in the planning committee if
you have questions or require further information.
Take
care, Rik Wanninkhof Chair, US SOLAS planning group
