Scientist Wanted: Biogeochemical Sedimentology
ASSISTANT,
ASSOCIATE OR SENIOR SCIENTIST
Biogeochemical Sedimentology
The
Geology and Geophysics Department, Woods Hole Oceanographic Insitution
invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured scientific staff
position in Biogeochemical Sedimentology. The successful applicant
will be expected to conduct research in areas relevant to carbon-burial
fluxes and to the formation and preservation of biologically controlled
paleoenvironmental records in sea-floor sediments. Development of
paleoenvironmental proxies and matters of timing and transport are
of particular interest:
What can distributions of molecular biomarkers reveal about community
structure?
What
are the relationships between sedimentary records and processes
that may be episodic or only quasi-continuous?
How
do fluxes of biogenic particles vary temporally and spatially in
the modern water column?
Where,
how frequently, and with what temporal consequences are sediments
redistributed?
Collaboration
with paleoceanographers, biologists, and marine geologists in all
departments at WHOI is encouraged. Women and minority candidates
are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will
have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree. Candidates are expected to establish
externally funded research programs to support their research. The
level of appointment will depend on background, experience and tenure
suitability. Opportunities exist for participation in our graduate
education program, the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography. Review
of applications will begin August 4, 2002.
