Subject: John Hedge's Passing

Colleagues,

It is with great sadness that I learned today that the community of oceanographers, organic geochemists, and scientists at large have lost one of its great lights. John I. Hedges, professor of Chemical Oceanography at the University of Washington, passed away last Friday in Germany from a heart attack. John was in Germany in a sabbatical (he spent some time recently in that country) and was scheduled to attend a Gordon Conference this week. John collapsed during a morning jog, not to come back to us. John was an amazing man by all measurable and immeasurable means. Like many others, I have been fortunate to be touched by his interest and generosity. Like many others, I owe a large part of my intellectual work and freedom to his curiosity and the routes he has opened for anyone who felt the urge to follow them (John was still well ahead of the curve to this day). More pragmatically, John has shaped and helped my career in so many ways I can't imagine where to start to describe them. More than anything, I've learned first hand, the few times I've worked with him, that science can reach its greatest level without compromise to the highest standard of humanity and kindness. We are all loosing a great person and a great thinker. He will be missed tremendously by us all. For those that knew him or were touched by his work and life, there will be a memorial service in Seattle near the end of August. If you plan to attend, please get back with Dr. Ron Benner (University of South Carolina: benner@biol.sc.edu) so people out in Seattle can plan for the appropriate number of visitors. A memorial symposium is also planned in John's name in the future. I will keep anyone interested if you wish to know the details.

Most sincerely

Patrick
