EGS-Meeting
I
would like to kindly request your assistance in bringing the following
announcement from my colleagues here at Villefranche, Hervé Claustre
and David Antoine, to the attention of the U.S. JGOFS community.
Hervé is the now the president of the scientific council for the
new French JGOFS follow-on program, PROOF (PROcessus biogéochimiques
dans l'Océan et Flux). We'd be happy to welcome folks here for the
European Geophysical Society meeting; Nice is nice in April.
Best, Marlon
Dear
Colleagues,
We are writing to you regarding the forthcoming European Geophysical
Society XXVII General Assembly (to be held at Nice, France, 22 -
26 April 2002), in which we organize a sessionb (BG3, co-sponsored
by OA) entitled `Marine optics and biogeochemistry: from micro-
to global scale'.
Description
of the session: The non-intrusive estimation of oceanic biogeochemical
processes through the inversion of optical measurements is a growing
research field. This increasing interest for marine bio-optics results
in large part from the recent (and future) availability of several
ocean colour sensors, and from the development of new in situ instruments
for the measurement of inherent and apparent optical properties
in the ocean interior. These measurements allow a description of
some biogeochemical fields over a large range of observation scales,
from the cm/ diurnal scale to the synoptic / decade scale. These
quantitative and qualitative improvements in our measurement capacity
for oceanic optical properties are also accompanied by progress
in optical modelling, allowing better inversion of optical measurements
in term of biogeochemical processes as well as the extraction of
new types of biogeochemical products. The focus of this special
session will be on recent observations or modelling investigations
at the interface between optics and biogeochemistry. In particular,
we encourage studies addressing biogeochemical processes at scales
that are difficult to study using conventional, i.e., non-optical,
methods. We also seek contributions dealing with the application
of optical methods at larger scales, and, in particular, studies
aimed at resolving regional to global scale variations in biogeochemistry
using satellite ocean colour observations (algorithms for deriving
new parameters from ocean colour, oceanic inherent optical properties,
phytoplankton distributions, primary production). We hope that you
will be able to attend the EGS meeting and to contribute to the
session. Please, post this announcement and circulate it among colleagues.

General information on the EGS Assembly and registration forms are
available by browsing the Web page http://www.copernicus.org/EGS/egsga/nice02/nice02.htm
Sending an abstract does not mean registration. Please do not send
the registration form to the convenor but to the EGS Office. Financial
support EGS is offering a limited amount of financial support under
three schemes. Application must be submitted with the abstract.
