Subject: Department Chair Position

The University of Southern Mississippi College of Science and Technology DEPARTMENT CHAIR – MARINE SCIENCE
The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Marine Science to begin July 1, 2004. The Chair position is a 12-month academic appointment based at the Stennis Space Center on the Mississippi Gulf Coast near the Louisiana border. The Chair is the chief administrative officer of a department that has twelve faculty members, 24 adjunct faculty, 28 research scientists and staff, and 50 graduate students. The department Chair’s duties include overseeing the academic programs, fostering interdisciplinary research activities, recruiting new faculty, and managing the department budgets and facilities. The successful candidate must have an excellent record of achievement in research and teaching and demonstrable administrative skills and experience.

The USM Department of Marine Science is a growing, multidisciplinary academic unit with research and teaching programs in biological, geological, and physical oceanography, marine chemistry, and hydrographic science. The Department of Marine Science was established at NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center in 1986 and offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Marine Science and an M.S. in Hydrographic Science. The department occupies three permanent and two temporary buildings at Stennis, including the George A. Knauer Marine Science Building that was dedicated in October 2003. The design has been completed for two additional buildings to be built in the near future. More information about the program is available on the Internet at http://www.usm.edu/marine.

The Stennis Space Center is home to more oceanographers than any other location in the world. In addition to NASA research activities, the Stennis Space Center is also the home of the NASA Commercial Remote Sensing Program, the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL-SSC), the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office, NOAA’s National Data Buoy Center, the NOAA Coastal Data Development Center, and the Maury Oceanographic Library, one of the country’s premier oceanographic libraries. The department Chair will interact regularly with the heads of these federal agencies to further the partnerships that have been established in research and education.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest, a one or two page summary of experience and administrative philosophy, a curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching and research interests, and names and telephone numbers of at least three references. Applications or nominations should be sent in writing to Dr. Alan Shiller, Search Committee Chair, Department of Marine Science, The University of Southern Mississippi, 1020 Balch Boulevard, Stennis Space Center, MS 39529 USA or by electronic mail to alan.shiller@usm.edu.
