Subject: Gordon Conference

Dear Colleague, This summer, I am co-chairing the second Gordon Research Conference in Environmental Bioinorganic Chemistry. (http://www.grc.org/programs/2004/envibio.htm) The conference was initiated by Francois Morel in June 2002 as a forum to bring oceanographers and geomicrobiologists together with chemists who study metalloenzymes that catalyze biogeochemically important processes. That conference was an outgrowth of the Center for Environmental Bioinorganic Chemistry at Princeton, one of NSF’s Environmental Molecular Science Institutes, but now encompasses a much larger group. The first conference was a big success and I am optimistic about the 2004 conference, given the strong program I have put together with my chemistry co-chair, Tom Spiro, of Princeton. I am hoping that a sizeable contingent of oceanographers will attend the conference, in keeping with the first one. Jim Moffett
