Air - sea biogeochemistry at high latitudes: SOLAS and the International Polar Year. SOLAS is aiming to co-ordinate and identify opportunities for collaboration during the international polar year (2007-8), with the goal of facilitating SOLAS-type research during this major international effort. For example, we know of physical oceanography projects that could provide berths for SOLAS scientists during transects around Antarctica. This and similar initiatives might allow us to make SOLAS-measurements is this grossly undersampled region (e.g. CO2, DMS other trace gases, aerosols) If enough of the community are planning work in the Southern Ocean or Arctic during the IPY then we may be able to co-ordinate cruise planning and build something greater that the sum of its parts. If you are planning to work in Polar regions during 2007-8, please contact Richard Bellerby (richard.bellerby@bjerknes.uib.no) at the address below, with brief details of your work, i.e. the nature of the question being examined, the location of the work, and whether you have applied for IPY endorsement. Please do this as soon as possible, but by the end of May at the latest. We will also be contacting other communities with IPY plans to see what platforms for collaboration are available. Richard Bellerby will compile a list of SOLAS-type work that is being planned alongside opportunities available for SOLAS scientists. After that we will solicit community input on how we can build on the proposed work.
