Subject: Oceanographer/Marine Molecular Biology

The Bermuda Biological Station for Research, Inc. (BBSR) is a US incorporated 501(c)(3) ‘not-for-profit’ marine research and education institution incorporated in New York State and based in Bermuda since 1903. BBSR currently employs a multi-national staff of approximately 100 people and caters to 2,000 scientific and educational visitors per year. Prominent activities include oceanographic and coral reef research conducted by resident and visiting scientists. We teach a number of university-level courses on topics ranging from marine pollution to global climate change. Additional information on BBSR, including details about our faculty interests, can be found at http://www.bbsr.edu. The current oceanographic research faculty at BBSR, consisting of five scientists with expertise in physical, biological and chemical oceanography, is looking to expand. We seek a colleague with an interest in applying contemporary marine molecular biological techniques to oceanographic questions. All scientists with expertise in any area of marine molecular biology are encouraged to apply but preference will be given to those whose interests compliment ongoing oceanographic research at BBSR such as microbial ecology and genomics, ocean carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, and sulfur biogeochemistry, and phytoplankton physiological ecology. We are looking for a very energetic and inquisitive colleague at any level, assistant, associate or senior professor level; higher-level hires require sustained records of productivity and grantsmanship. The position is fully funded for two years including a limited startup package. The successful applicant is expected to generate a self-supporting, high-quality, extramurally-funded research program within 3-5 years. An interest and ability to teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level, generally no more than one course per year, is preferred but not required, as is an interest in mentoring PhD students. Minimum qualifications for this position are a Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field, at least one year of post-doctoral experience and demonstrated granstmanship activity. Review of applicants will commence 1 November 2004 and continue as applications are received until the position is filled. The preferred starting date is 1 February 2005, but this is negotiable. Please send a cover letter describing research and teaching philosophies and goals, a CV, and the names and addresses of three references to Dr. Michael Lomas at either mlomas@bbsr.edu or: Oceanographer/Molecular Biologist Search Committee c/o Dr. Michael Lomas Bermuda Biological Station for Research St.George’s GE01 Bermuda

BBSR has just finished construction of a 14,000 sq. ft. research laboratory that will house both the oceanographic and molecular biological programs. BBSR scientists are currently engaged in building instrument infrastructure in support of their research objectives. This includes development of a particle imaging facility (e.g., Olympus epifluorescent scope with image capture software, Cytopeia Influx hi-speed cell sorter), and a complete seawater analytical facility (as part of the BATS program). An ABI 310 DNA sequencer, BioRad CHEF apparatus, PCR machines, and associated equipment are available. BBSR operates the 115' R/V Weatherbird II for time-series and process-oriented oceanographic research and has a number of small research vessels capable of near shore/reef research. BBSR is an equal opportunity employer and operates a drug-free workplace and learning environment
