Description: Ocean Color remote sensing has provided an unprecedented global view of the variability of phytoplankton biomass and ocean primary production in space and time. However, understanding how global patterns of pelagic primary productivity translate into carbon sequestration requires a greater knowledge of the role of taxonomic and functional groups in both primary and secondary producers. It is this knowledge that will enable us to infer the climate sensitivity of the marine biota and ultimately its role in sequestering anthropogenic CO2 in a changing ocean. This session invites contributions that illustrate and discuss the role of ocean biota and pelagic ecosystem structure in the sequestration of carbon in past, present and future oceans.
