Subject: Postdoctoral Fellow in Bio-Physical Marine Modelling

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellow to undertake research for development of predictive bio-physical models for coastal marine systems. This research is part of Dalhousie University's Centre for Marine Environmental Prediction (CMEP; www.cmep.ca). The research focus of CMEP is the integration of earth observation systems with state of the art tools for simulating physical, chemical, and biological responses of the ocean to environmental forcing. Recently acquired infrastructure includes excellent computational facilities and a state of the art coastal observation and forecasting system located at Lunenburg Bay, N.S., Canada. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with researchers in Dalhousie University's Departments of Oceanography and Mathematics & Statistics, as well as with scientists from the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. The research team will focus on development of a system for data-driven prediction of coastal physical and biological dynamics. The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in physical or biological oceanography, or a related discipline. Experience in developing models of marine ecological processes and their coupling to ocean circulation models is required. Knowledge of inverse modelling, or data assimilation, would be an asset. The candidate will undertake to incorporate biological dynamics into a fully prognostic 3D coastal circulation model which is being developed as part of CMEP. Funding is available for 2 years at an annual salary of between $38,000 and $42,000 plus benefits, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Applicants should submit a statement of interest, curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses, phone and email of three references to Mr. Raymond St. Pierre, Program Manager, Dept. of Oceanography, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, B3H 4J1 (fax: 902-494-2885, email: raymond.stpierre@phys.ocean.dal.ca). The application deadline is September 15, 2003, but the position will remain open until filled. DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY is an Employment Equity/Affirmative Action Employer. The University encourages applications from qualified women, Aboriginal peoples, racially visible people, and persons with a disability. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
