Researcher, R3 (Biological Oceanographer), position number 88481T,
UHM SOEST , (Manoa), temporary, non-tenure track, to begin approximately
January 2004 for one year, annually renewable subject to availability
of funds. Duties: Provides scientific leadership and day-to-day
oversight to the ongoing biogeochemical portion of the Hawaii Ocean
Time-series (HOT) program including, but not limited to, the preparation
of research proposals, analysis and synthesis of oceanographic time-series
data sets for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals,
participation in a minimum of 10 four-to-five day research cruises
per annum, interaction with national and international colleagues,
and overall management of HOT biogeochemistry program staff. Will
work closely with the HOT program P.I.s during the first year of
the appointment, but will be expected to have a progressively responsible
leadership position over time. The successful candidate will be
expected to raise at least one-half of her/his salary from extramural
grants by the end of the first year of employment. Numerous opportunities
for collaborative research already exist at the University of Hawaii
and it is expected that new programs will be created by the successful
candidate. The HOT biogeochemistry program is currently funded through
2008. Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in oceanography or related discipline
with research interests in marine microbial ecology/biogeochemistry;
2 years experience in basic oceanographic field sampling techniques
and methods of seawater analysis; previous experience in the development
and application of laboratory and field methods for the measurement
of ecosystem dynamics; excellent analytical, organizational and
interpersonal skills; previous sea-going experience; ability to
supervise, lead by example, mentor, and motivate laboratory technicians
and graduate students; possess a commitment to teamwork; demonstrated
record of quality research, strong publication record and evidence
of successful grantsmanship; and the ability to work for extended
periods of time on research vessels at sea in a totally smoke-free
environment. Desirable qualifications: Interest and previous experience
in the analysis and interpretation of time series biogeochemical
data sets, working knowledge of the principles of microbiology,
ecology, and biogeochemistry. Pay range: R3M11, commensurate with
