I want to draw your attention to the SCOPE Series of books published by Island Press since late 2000 that are described below and on the attachment, and can also be accessed at http://www.islandpress.org/scope. SCOPEšs decision to publish with Ėsland Press, a well-known environmental publishing firm which is also a not-for-profit organization, should provide academic researchers with frequent up to date assessments of research and progress in key environmental areas. Moreover, these volumes are made available at a price that also allows the books to be used widely in the classroom from senior undergraduate courses onwards, and by policy makers. Although SCOPE continues to work in its traditional mode with longer term assessments of environmental issues it has concluded that some of these issues are progressing at a very speedy rate but have not reached any final consensus. In the latter cases, SCOPE has decided to conduct Rapid Assessment Projects through a fast-track process with discussion of cross cutting issues, ensuring that the discussions and results of an international expert consultation are made available to the public within one year of the time of the meeting. I hope that you will examine this website and sign up with Island Press for information on future titles and special offers. As Editor-in-Chief, I also encourage you to circulate this message and the email promotion attachment as widely as possible, bringing the SCOPE Series with Island Press to the attention of your colleagues and senior researchers, both within and outside the SCOPE community.
