Old Dominion University's Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences seeks a candidate who will develop a suite of specialized stains and molecular probes as tools to determine the efficacy of ballast-water treatment technologies. Bacteria and phytoplankton will be subjected to laboratory-scale technologies and subsequently evaluated for their viability. Other activities will include assays to detect potentially harmful bacteria and algae. The successful candidate will have experience with phytoplankton culture (preferably dinoflagellates), culture of heterotrophic bacteria, and be familiar with standard bacteria, phytoplankton enumeration and cell-viability techniques. Position may continue for 18 months, with the possibility of extension by collaborating on future research proposals.
