Subject: Biogeochemistry of Planktonic Phosphorus Cycling: Genes to Geochemical Cycles

Dear Colleague,
We would like to call your attention to the special session entitled " Biogeochemistry of Planktonic Phosphorus Cycling: Genes to Geochemical Cycles " to be held at the Ocean Sciences Meeting in Honolulu , Hawaii on February 20-24, 2006. The deadline for submission is October 20.

David Karl will open the session with a discussion centered on the subtropical gyres, but in addition to the open ocean, we look forward to receiving abstracts from you that address planktonic phosphorus cycling in other aquatic environments.

Biogeochemistry of Planktonic Phosphorus Cycling: Genes to Geochemical Cycles (OS048)
Phosphorus has often been recognized as the “limiting” nutrient in lacustrine ecosystems, and it is becoming increasingly clear that phosphorus availability also impacts the growth and ecological function of organisms in the surface ocean as well. Current research is revealing that plankton may invoke a surprising diversity of physiological and biochemical strategies to compete for this essential nutrient. In addition, the complex chemical forms of phosphorus that are available to plankton are also coming to light. This session broadly calls for studies of phosphorus cycling that link the genetic potential or physiological response of plankton to the bioavailability or chemical composition of phosphorus in freshwater, estuarine and marine systems. We also seek field- or modeling-based studies that explore the impact of community structure on the flow of phosphorus through planktonic ecosystems in lakes, estuaries and the coastal and open ocean.

Hope to see you in Honolulu !
