Subject: Associate Research Scientist (Project) in Ocean Biogeochemistry

Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University is recruiting for an Associate Research Scientist (Project) in the area of ocean biogeochemistry. The position will be mainly associated with two field projects on biological productivity and nutrient cycling, one in the Caribbean Sea and one in the Bering Sea. This position will be supported for two years in conjunction with these projects and support for the position thereafter will be dependant on the availability of future funds. Areas of interest include the natural abundance isotopic studies of the marine nitrogen and carbon cycles and in particular the diagnosis of biological processes from the isotopic signatures of selected inorganic and organic pools. Particular interest will be on the nitrogen cycle and the application of new approaches to the analysis of surface production and denitrification. The ideal candidate would have a background in plankton ecology, biogeochemical cycling and mass spectrometry. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills in English are required. A working knowledge of Spanish is desirable. Search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ads appear and until position is filled.
