Postdoctoral Position in Ocean Biogeochemical Modelling
LEGOS, Toulouse, France
MERSEA (Marine Environment and Security for the European Area, http://www.mersea.eu.org/html/information/project/index.html)
Strand-1 project (initial period 2001-2003) builds on the current
European capabilities for development, implementation and operational
use of marine modeling and data assimilation systems, space-borne
observations and in-situ observing networks and systems. The overall
objective is to facilitate the visibility, understanding and exchange
of the ocean modelling data, output products for users and evaluate
the strengths and weaknesses of the European Capacity for Ocean
Monitoring and Forecasting, i.e. the following existing basin-scale
integrated monitoring systems: FOAM (Met. Office, United Kingdom),
MERCATOR (MERCATOR-OCEAN, France), MFS (INGV, Italy) and TOPAZ (NERSC,
Norway). This post-doctoral position is part of the European MERSEA
follow-on Integrated Project which will continue in 2004-2008 and
improve what MERSEA strand-1 initiated.
Within the Modelling and Data Assimilation work package, the candidate
will have to include a cell quota approach in a marine ecosystem
model with allometric relationships and to consider multiple nutrients
with their potential colimitation. This new model will be tested
at various JGOFS series and process study sites in a 1D setting.
Assimilation methods will be used to guide all model development
steps. A basin scale view of changes in the ecosystem model will
be evaluated by running 3D high resolution simulations in the North
Atlantic ocean.
A recent PhD in oceanic biogeochemistry and/or physical oceanography
or a related field is required. The applicant should have a strong
background in geophysical fluid dynamics and numerical modelling.
Expertise in data assimilation is appreciated. Appointment will
be yearly renewable for a maximum of three years and may start May
1st, 2004 or later.
