The University of Connecticut Head of the Department of Marine
Sciences and Director of the Marine Sciences & Technology Center
The University of Connecticut seeks a distinguished senior scientist
with broad interests in Coastal Oceanography to lead the newly integrated
Department of Marine Sciences and the Marine Sciences & Technology
Center. The University of Connecticut has made a major investment
in the Marine Sciences Department and Technology Center through
a state-of-the-art 138,000 sq ft research and teaching facility
located on Long Island Sound and a new coastal oceanography research
vessel, the R/V Connecticut. The department has strong research
programs in environmental geochemistry, coastal physical processes
and marine biology and ecology and is co-located in the new Marine
Sciences building with the National Undersea Research Center, the
CT Sea Grant College Program and the Long Island Sound Resource
Center. The department also regularly collaborates with faculty
in environmental engineering, geological sciences, ecology and evolutionary
biology and molecular and cell biology. Information about the research

The Head and Director will report to the Dean of the College of
Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). She/he will be expected to oversee
the academic program, coordinate the recruitment of faculty, foster
interdisciplinary research activities and seek external support
for the Marine Science Department and the Technology Center. She/he
will broaden collaborations appropriate to the research, educational
and outreach missions of Marine Sciences with partners within the
University and externally. The successful candidate will have an
outstanding record of extramurally funded research and scholarship
meriting the rank of full professor; a passionate commitment to
the research and educational missions of a public university; leadership
skills to implement a shared vision for the successful growth and
development of an excellent coastal marine sciences program; and
the communication and interpersonal skills necessary to achieve
fiscal and programmatic goals through effective interactions within
the University and with federal, state, and private organizations.
