Subject: POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN ESTUARINE/COASTAL OCEAN ORGANIC MATTER CYCLING

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science and the Old Dominion University Department of Chemistry seek applicants for a 1-2 year postdoctoral fellowship starting Spring 2004 or sooner. The work will be directed jointly by Drs. Jim Bauer (VIMS) and Ken Mopper (ODU) on a project investigating DOM modification and its implications for studies of seawater organic matter cycling. The research involves the effects of microbial and photochemical transformations on DOM structure and isotopic signatures in river, estuarine, and coastal ocean systems. The candidate should have a strong background in aquatic isotope or organic geochemistry. Experience in natural abundance isotopic techniques (14C, 13C, 15N, 18O), organic matter characterization (e.g., GC-MS, NMR, IR, UV), microbial ecological methods, and/or photochemical techniques is strongly desirable. Applicants for the position should send their full CV, a one-page statement of research interests and experience, and full contact information for three references to Dr. Jim Bauer, School of Marine Science, VIMS, College of William and Mary, 1208 Greate Road, Gloucester Point, VA 23062-1346, or bauer@vims.edu. Position open until filled.
