1. SOLAS NEWS - SOLAS Science 2007
SOLAS is very pleased to announce that the next SOLAS Open Science
Conference will be held in Xiamen, China, 6-9 March 2007. The Conference
will be hosted by Guang Yu Shi (Inst. Atmospheric Physics) and Minhan
Dai (Xiamen U.) and and will follow on from the successful meeting
in Halifax in 2004. More details will be announced in due course.
2. ANNOUNCEMENTS
* International Postdoctoral Scientist Network for Earth Systems
Science: First Workshop Breckenridge, Colorado June 23-25, 2005
As a step towards fuller integration of earth system science, IGBP/AIMES
(International Global Biosphere Project/Analysis, Integration and
Modeling of the Earth System) are planning an international postdoctoral
scientist network for earth system science. This network will serve
as a mechanism for promoting the development of the next generation
of scientists to be increasingly cross-cutting as will be required
by the future of Earth system modeling. An important element will
be including participants from developing countries to both contribute
their expertise in quickly changing and highly vulnerable environments,
as well as to build the human resources in important regions of
the globe for future science projects. To inaugurate the network
we plan a first workshop in June, 2005. The workshop agenda will
include talks from one senior person and several postdoctoral scientists
on two topics: Topic 1: The end of nature? Human-earth systems interactions
Topic 2: Is there a scenario in the class? Different views of the
future (Multi-scaled approaches to Earth System modeling). All participates
will be invited to give a talk or present a poster during the workshop.
More information is available at: http://www.asp.ucar.edu/ess.html.
Applications deadline: 15 April
* CLIVAR/GOOS/OOPC/Argo SOUTH PACIFIC WORKSHOP 10-13th October 2005,
University of Concepción, Chile. Workshop Objectives * To review
our present understanding of the role of the South Pacific in seasonal
to decadal variability of the climate system. * To assess the adequacy
of present day climate models to capture essential physics and observational
networks to monitor climate variability and change. * To assess
the influence of the South Pacific on seasonal forecast skill over
South America and Australasia. * To support and help coordinate
existing and beginning climate observing efforts and to build partnerships.
* To identify deployment opportunities for the observing network.
* To identify where the existing observing network needs to be supplemented.
* To look for coordination of CLIVAR activities with other programmes
in the South Pacific such as Carbon, SOLAS and IMBER. More information:

* Call for Ideas for the Next Earth Explorer Core Missions
As part of its Earth Observation Envelope Programme, the European
Space Agency (ESA) announces an opportunity for scientists from
the Earth Observation communities in ESA Member States and Canada,
to make proposals for ideas to be assessed as potential Earth Explorer
Core Missions. These missions are intended to be used to conduct
research in the field of Earth Observation and/or to demonstrate
the potential of new innovation Earth Observation techniques of
relevance to both the scientific and the application communities.

3. JOB OPPORTUNITIES
* Oceanographic Research Technicians at The Bermuda Biological Station
for Research BBSR is a not-for-profit research and education institution
employing a multi-national staff of approximately 80 people and
based in Bermuda since 1903. Activities include oceanographic and
marine biological research conducted by resident and visiting scientists,
and university level courses on topics ranging from marine pollution
to biogeochemical cycles in the Sargasso Sea.. BBSR is an Equal
Opportunity employer. Continued growth in the oceanography research
programs at BBSR (Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) and
affiliated programs) have led to a number of technical openings.
For all of these openings BBSR seeks young energetic oceanographic
technicians with prior sea-going and analytical laboratory experience.
The primary responsibilities for each position and specific contacts
are given at http://www.bbsr.edu/involved/job_ops/job_ops.html

the guidance and coordination of the Deputy Secretary-General, the
incumbent is responsible for the international coordination, planning
and organization (where appropriate) of scientific research projects
and related activities contributing to the goals of the World Climate
Research Programme (WCRP). In order to fulfil this task, the incumbent

and non-governmental international organizations and a wide range
of national administrations and research agencies. He/she will also
need to establish effective working relationships with a wide international
community of scientists in all fields of geosciences, including
meteorology and atmospheric sciences, oceanography, polar sciences,
hydrology and land surface processes, as well as space research.
