Summer Courses at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research
June 2 through August 21, 2004
Coral Reef Ecology June 2-24
Dr. Samantha De Putron, BBSR
Dr. Ross Jones, BBSR
Dr. Robbie Smith, BBSR and Georgia State University
An integrated introduction and exposure to active areas of research
covering physiology, photosynthesis, population biology, competition,
ecosystems and human impact. Laboratory and field techniques of
reef studies.
Chemosensory Biology in the Marine Environment June 6 - 26
Dr. Charles Derby, Georgia State University
Dr. Tim McClintock, University of Kentucky
Dr. Hank Trapido-Rosenthal, BBSR
A study of chemosensory neurobiology in the marine environment at
the physiological, biochemical and molecular levels. Lectures will
deal with chemoreception in a variety of marine organisms.
Marine Microbial Ecology June 27 - July 11
Dr. Craig Carlson, UC Santa Barbara
Dr. Stephen Giovannoni, Oregon State University
Traditional microbiology to the most recent molecular approaches
will be considered within the context of biogeochemical processes.
Field trips and laboratory experiments in the open ocean and coral
reef rich waters surrounding Bermuda.
Marine Genomics July 11 - 17
Dr. Stephen Giovannoni, Oregon State University
Dr. John Heidelberg, The Institute for Genomic Research
A brief introduction to genomic tools and the computational approaches
useful in the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data to address
specific hypothesis relevant to marine microbial ecology.
Oceans and Reefs in Global Climate Change July 11 - 31
Dr. Fred MacKenzie, University of Hawaiíi at Manoa
This course deals with what we know and do not know about global
climate change, in particular the role of the ocean and terrestrial
biosphere as modulators of change due to feedbacks that operate
in these systems.
Tropical Marine Invertebrates July 25 - August 21
Dr. Clayton Cook, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution
Dr. Kathryn Coates, BBSR
Dr. Penelope Barnes, Malaspina University College
Invertebrate diversity of Bermuda's reefs, seagrass and mangrove
habitats is examined systematically and in relation to biological
associations, behaviors, body forms and habitats.
Behaviour of Coral Reef Animals July 27 - August 21
Drs. Ruth Byrne and Michael Kuba, Konrad Lorenze Institute for Evolution
and Cognition Research, Austria
Students will study behavior and cognition in a wide range of coral
reef animals, such as fish, sea stars, octopus, squid, crabs and
polychaetes, in team projects. Within these projects we will focus
on how to conduct hypothesis-driven research.
Scientific Photography August 8 - 21
Dr. James Wood, BBSR
An intensive introduction to scientific photography comprised of
lectures, required reading, laboratory exercises, demonstrations
and field assignments. This two-week course exposes students to
the use of photography as a scientific tool.
