deadline for early registration and abstract submission for the
SOLAS Open Science conference is June 15th 2004. You can register
online at http://www.uea.ac.uk/env/solas/ss04/. This will be the
first event to present the results of SOLAS and the first time the
community has got together since the inaugural meeting in Damp,
Germany in 2000. Halifax is an interesting destination with plenty
of opportunities for whale watching along the dramatic Nova Scotian
coastline. Full details of the talks, poster sessions and discussion
fora can be found on the above website.
2) Canadian SOLAS Network Post-Doctoral Fellowship in marine production
of dimethylsulfide (DMS) and related compounds. A research team
with a solid reputation for its work on the marine production of
dimethylsulfide (DMS) is looking for candidates for a post-doctoral
fellowship on marine DMS(P) production. The fellowship will be conducted
in the context of the Canadian SOLAS Network (http://csolas.dal.ca)
funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council
of Canada (NSERC) and the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric
Science (CFCAS). The candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in an appropriate
discipline and a demonstrated capacity for autonomous work in at
least one of the following research fields: DMS quantification (GC
and GC-MS) and cycling, ecophysiology of marine bacteria and/or
phytoplankton, and oceanic biogeochemical cycles. The host research
team is composed of physical and biological oceanographers, modellers
and atmospheric scientists. Applicants must be prepared to work
in French or English. Duration of the position is 2 years. The laboratory
is located in Quebec City (Université Laval), Quebec, Canada. This

3) Dear Colleague: We are pleased to announce that we are soliciting
nominations for the 2005 A.G. HUNTSMAN AWARDS for Excellence in
Marine Sciences. The Huntsman Award was established in 1980 to honour
individuals of any nationality who have had and continue to have
a major influence on the development of marine science. To mark
the Award's 25th anniversary, a 2-day jubilee is planned for September
2005. An award will be presented in each of the categories of: -
Marine Geosciences - Physical/Chemical Oceanography - Biological/Fisheries
Oceanography - Interdisciplinary Marine Science The special Award
in the Interdisciplinary Marine Science category is intended to
recognize exceptional contributions across two or more marine science
disciplines, at the interface between the oceans and other natural
systems, or in the expansion of marine sciences into new fields.
Please consider preparing a nomination for a colleague in one or
more of the above categories. Nominations can be prepared and submitted
through the Huntsman websites: http://www.bio.gc.ca/huntsman/huntsman-e.html
(English) http://www.bio.gc.ca/huntsman/huntsman-f.html (French).
