HUNTSMAN AWARDS for Excellence in Marine Sciences 4) SOLAS Science Plan and Implementation Strategy ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ 1) The deadline for early registration and abstract submission for the SOLAS Open Science conference is June 15th 2004. You can register online at http://www.uea.ac.uk/env/solas/ss04/. This will be the first event to present the results of SOLAS and the first time the community has got together since the inaugural meeting in Damp, Germany in 2000. Halifax is an interesting destination with plenty of opportunities for whale watching along the dramatic Nova Scotian coastline. 2) Canadian SOLAS Network Post-Doctoral Fellowship in marine production of dimethylsulfide (DMS) and related compounds. A research team with a solid reputation for its work on the marine production of dimethylsulfide (DMS) is looking for candidates for a post-doctoral fellowship on marine DMS(P) production. The fellowship will be conducted in the context of the Canadian SOLAS Network (http://csolas.dal.ca) funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Science (CFCAS). The candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in an appropriate discipline and a demonstrated capacity for autonomous work in at least one of the following research fields: DMS quantification (GC and GC-MS) and cycling, ecophysiology of marine bacteria and/or phytoplankton, and oceanic biogeochemical cycles. The host research team is composed of physical and biological oceanographers, modellers and atmospheric scientists. Applicants must be prepared to work in French or English. Duration of the position is 2 years. The laboratory is located in Quebec City (Université Laval), Quebec, Canada. This fellowship represents a unique opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team involved in an international research program (SOLAS). 3) Dear Colleague: We are pleased to announce that we are soliciting nominations for the 2005 A.G. HUNTSMAN AWARDS for Excellence in Marine Sciences. The Huntsman Award was established in 1980 to honour individuals of any nationality who have had and continue to have a major influence on the development of marine science. To mark the Award's 25th anniversary, a 2-day jubilee is planned for September 2005. An award will be presented in each of the categories of: - Marine Geosciences - Physical/Chemical Oceanography - Biological/Fisheries Oceanography - Interdisciplinary Marine Science The special Award in the Interdisciplinary Marine Science category is intended to recognize exceptional contributions across two or more marine science disciplines, at the interface between the oceans and other natural systems, or in the expansion of marine sciences into new fields. Please consider preparing a nomination for a colleague in one or more of the above categories. It is preferred that nominations be submitted in English. Upon completion the nomination form is expected to be of order 2-5 pages, and inclusion of a full curriculum vitae and publication list is requested.
