AGU Fall Meeting: call for abstracts on:

The Oceanic Deep Chlorophyll Maximum: Observation and Modeling (Session OS07)

You are warmly invited to submit an abstract for session OS07 of the AGU fall meeting to be held in San Francisco on 11-15 December 2006. The deadline of electronic versions has been set to 7 September and to 22 August for postal mail abstracts. Please use the following website for information and abstract submission:

Session topic:
Deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) layers are widely observed in large parts of the world's oceans and are thought to contribute significantly to new production in oligotrophic regimes. There has been some evidence for significant spatial and temporal variability in DCM layers at diurnal to seasonal and longer time scales. However, the mechanisms underlying DCM variability and contributing to DCM formation are not well understood or documented. DCM fluctuations may reflect a combination of several physical and biogeochemical factors, including mixed layer depth, nutricline, ecosystem structure, nutrient limitation and light conditions in the euphotic zone.
This session provides a forum for interdisciplinary discussions of DCM variability and formation mechanisms, particularly DCMs in the open ocean. Topics include, but are not limited to (1) temporal and spatial variations, (2) physical forcing, and (3) impacts of biogeochemical variability and ecosystem dynamics. We encourage submission of contributions using observational and/or modeling approaches, especially those that address the interaction of physical and biogeochemical processes.
