Roles of microbes in food-web controls of marine biogeochemical fluxes: New approaches and paradigms [Session BG6.04]

The production, transformation and cycling of climate active compounds and gasses in the upper ocean are important control points for the regulation of air-sea fluxes that control climate. Many of the critical fluxes are mediated by small autotrophs, heterotrophic bacteria and protists, which act together as a "microbial hub". Although these groups of organisms have been studied for over two decades, our understanding of how they interact with each other and with organic and inorganic nutrients (C, N, Fe) and climate active gasses (e.g. CO2, DMS, halogens) is incomplete. This session will examine how the Microbial Hub controls the biogeochemical fluxes of climate active properties in the upper ocean.
