Hints for CD-ROM access in MacOS environment
Important note for Mac OS 9 and 10 systems
using Internet Explorer:
Before viewing the data files (available from the process study data directories)
you must tell IE which Helper Application to use. Failure to do so may
cause the browser or text application to hang and requires a Force Quit
to recover. Specifying the Helper Application before accessing the data
prevents IE from hanging when you click on a data file link. If the Mac
does appear to hang, use the key sequence command+option+escape, or choose
Force Quit from the Apple menu to abort the stalled application (Explorer
or Text viewing Helper Application).
On some Mac OS X systems, IE
may hang when trying to open files from the CD-ROM if the machine is
not connected to the Internet. If you experience this problem, it may help
to choose 'Work Offline' from the 'File' menu.
If using Internet Explorer 4.x or 5.x in Mac OS environment:
With IE open, click Edit - Preferences (4.x) or choose Preferences from
the Explorer menu (5.x).
Expand Receiving Files and click File Helpers.
In the File Helper Settings pane, select Tab Separated Values and then
click Change. If Tab Separated Value isn't listed, click Add.
Enter the following values:
Description: Tab Separated Values
Extension: .tsv
MIME type: application/text
Under File Type, Browse to the SimpleText (TextEdit) application
File type should be TEXT
File creator should be "ttxt" (must be four characters)
Select Plain Text, Use For Incoming, and Use For Outgoing in the Encoding
section.
Choose an option from the Download Destination pop-up menu. (ie. Download
Folder)
Choose View With Application from the 'How to Handle' or 'View with browser'
menu.
If necessary, browse once again to the SimpleText (TextEdit) application.
Click OK
Click OK
The preferences settings should now look like this:
Quit/Close Internet Explorer to apply modified preference settings.
Open welcome.htm on CD-ROM and navigate through the CD-ROM data report
to one of the basin study Data Directory HTML pages. When you click on
a data file link (left column of table), IE will prompt for your download
preference. You may choose to open the file with an application (Text
viewer or Spreadsheet), or 'Save this file to disk'. Use Apple-Click to
simply download the file without previewing on the screen.
Macintosh OS X and Netscape
If using Macintosh OS X 10.2 and Netscape 7.x it is possible to set the
Helper Applications to view the .tsv data files directly in a speadsheet
application, i.e. Microsoft Office X Excel.
With Netscape open, choose Preferences from the Netscape menu.
Choose Helper Applications from the Navigator section.
If application/text isn't listed, click 'New Type'.
Enter the following values:
Description of type: Tab-separated Values
File Extension: .tsv
MIME type: application/text
For 'Application to use:' Click on the [Choose...] button and browse to
your spreadsheet application, i.e. Applications - Microsoft Office X -
