US JGOFS summer PI Meeting - UPDATE

PURPOSE:

The main purpose of the PI meeting is to encourage collaborative, community research on the key SMP goals. As such we will devote much of the workshop to plenary discussions and working groups. A "mini-theme" has been chosen to focus on some of the discussion BUT all topics within the SMP are fair game.

MEETING SPECS:

date:               12-16 July 1998
location:         Keystone, CO
mini-theme: "The large-scale ocean carbon cycle: data-based and modeling perspectives" AGENDA: We have worked up a new agenda which includes:

CURRENT SMP PI HEAD COUNT:

The number of SMP Principal Investigators has nearly doubled this year (from 42 to 78, NOT counting Co-PI's). The NSF 1999 grantees add 10 projects and 21 new investigators to the original list, AND the new NOAA OACES grantees will add about 9 projects and 15 new investigators. Funds are available for about 50-60 investigators to attend the Keystone conference. We'd like to see ALL of the projects represented at the meeting and leave as much room as possible for students and post-docs.

SOLICITATION FOR TALKS

We would like to solicit talks from you which are either

POSTERS

We would like to see each project represented in the poster sessions; multiple posters, particularly from junior scientists are encouraged.

WORKING GROUPS

Most of the meeting will be devoted to the various SMP working groups. A list of talking points will be distributed for each WG as the meeting date approaches, and everyone is encouraged to bring material for informal talks/presentations in the working group meetings. Currently we have 8 working groups:

Information about the SMP and goals/tasks of these working groups (all except the proposed new "Food Groups"), can be found at http://usjgofs.whoi.edu/mzweb/syn-mod.htm

OTHER DETAILS

A few of you have asked about space/room arrangements at the Keystone Conference Center. Mary Zawoysky will have more of these specifics after visiting there in a week or two. Several of you have asked about having rooms available for project meetings. We will certainly figure out a way to accommodate all of you along these line. There are 6 "break-out" rooms available, and we will try to keep as many of these available during the early evening as possible.
