"Nitrogen production and recycling in the APFZ"

The purpose of this project is to make core measurements of new (nitrate) production and regenerated (ammonium) production and regeneration with ¹⁵N tracer techniques. Additionally, the importance of selected organic nitrogen sources for production will be evaluated to examine their contribution to total production. The field work will be carried out on the 2 APFZ process cruises. The work will be integrated with parallel measurements of nitrogen production in the Ross Sea by another investigator (Bill Cochlan). The measurements made in my component potentially can be used together with those of primary productivity, bacteria, and other surface biological variables to clarify new production in the Southern Ocean.
