The Time Series observatories at Bermuda and Hawaii are currently committed to continue operations until 1998. Observations beyond the decade begun in 1988 are likely to continue and plans are being made to maintain this effort in the future.
The Southern Ocean Process Study began with small-scale preliminary studies during the austral field season in 1995-96, and continues with a major field campaign in 1997-98. The analysis and scientific presentation phases of the Southern Ocean program will last into mid-1999.
A series of workshops and meetings of Arabian Sea and Southern Ocean Principal Investigators is being and will be held during the post-fieldwork phase of each program. The objective is to begin a study-wide synthesis of the results such that they maybe integrated with the overall program synthesis.
The final phase of U.S. JGOFS is the Synthesis and Modeling Project. It aims to integrate the observational results from field studies into a set of models that reflect our current understanding of the ocean carbon cycle and its associated uncertainties.
