Has U.S. JGOFS SMP been effective??
PI-based synthesis of project data is a new idea
Integrating modelers and scientists…
The agencies have supported SMP in a big way ($’s ~ U.S. JGOFS process study)
Can we show SMP’s effectiveness???
A Short SMP History
1995: U.S. JGOFS SMP steering committee formed
1996: Durham meeting
1997: Implementation report published & first PI meeting
2003: Lights out…
Goals of U.S. JGOFS SMP
Synthesize natural/anthropogenic in/organic carbon inventories & fluxes
Identify & quantify processes controlling the partitioning among carbon reservoirs
Assess processes leading to spatial/temporal variability in carbon partitioning
Scale results to longer time & larger spatial domains
Improve capabilities for monitoring & prediction of carbon partitioning
Program Elements
Global and regional mass balances
Synthesis of natural/anthropogenic carbon inventories & budgets (& related substances)
Mechanistic controls on local carbon balances
Identify & model processes controlling within-ocean & ocean-atmosphere partitioning of carbon (& related …)
Extrapolation, monitoring & prediction
Scale local results to regional/global & long-time scales
Develop & apply accurate prediction capabilities
