"Carbon and Nitrogen in Dissolved Organics: A Contribution to the U.S. JGOFS Southern Ocean Program"

The goal of our program is to determine the roles of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) as intermediates in the oceanic carbon and nitrogen cycles. Our experimental objectives are 1) to determine the concentrations of DOC and DON throughout the water column and 2) to measure the rates of DOC production by autotrophs and mineralization by heterotrophs. Special collaborations will exist with groups interested in microbial dynamics and carbon cycling, the nitrogen cycle, and larger scale biogeochemical processes. The cruises that are proposed for coverage by our group are Ross Sea Process Studies I, II, and IV, and one Polar Front cruise.
