Synthesis and Modeling Project
Status and Future Directions

Date: Tue, 22 Apr 1999

Status

As of April 1999, the US JGOFS Synthesis and Modeling Project comprises 41 research projects (and some 80 Principal Investigators) funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Ocean-Atmosphere Carbon Exchange Study (NOAA - OACES), and Department of Energy (DOE).  These projects comprise a broad spectrum of analyses designed to utilize existing JGOFS data sets (and others); and include both data synthesis and modeling at local, regional and global scales.  We anticipate that additional funding for the Synthesis and Modeling Project will be made available in the fiscal year 2000, and have identified important areas for future research below.

Future Directions

As the U.S. JGOFS Synthesis and Modeling Project matures and specific projects are completed, the foci for the program will be refined to emphasize emerging new scientific directions and remaining elements of the original implementation plan.  High priority will be given to proposals addressing the following topics of equally importance:
