SCOR WG116

2001 Proposed Meeting plans

Dates:  July 8-9, 2001

Site:  Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Intended to precede IGBP co-sponsored meeting:  "Challenges of a Changing Earth", Global Change Environmental Sciences Conference, July 10-13

SCOR Working Group 116 membership should be confirmed in the early fall of 2000.  The first meeting of this WG is proposed for July 8-9, 2001 in Amsterdam to coincide with a large Global Change Conference that is of relevance to many of the WG members.  Prior to the meeting, the chair will initiate via email discussion of the current terms of reference, our first meeting agenda, and possible action items that the WG may wish to pursue.  Our first WG meeting is envisioned lasting two full days, using about half of the time on each day for the participants to report on their own work within the WG topic, and the other half of the schedule discussing the TOR and specific action items for 2001 and beyond.  Since the Global Change Conference runs from Tuesday through Friday, we would hold our meeting the Sunday/Monday preceding the event.  Because this is our first meeting, it was thought that a shorter, but forward looking meeting to decide the future of this WG and our goals, plans and activities would be sufficient at this time.  There is also the option if more time is needed, to plan to break away during the conference, but until the conference arrangements and parallel sessions are finalized, this is difficult to plan.  Conference organizers are encouraging such parallel meetings and the WG chair is initiating discussion with conference organizers for room/site support.  Abstracts for the larger meeting are due in March 2001, thus WG participants will be able to decide well in advance of this SCOR WG meeting whether they wish to contribute to the larger conference or not.  One goal is of course to encourage participation in the larger conference and thus active participation in this meeting by scientists working in ocean sciences on research related to the global C cycle.
