NBP: THE DAY AFTER THE STORM - October 7, 1996

Today we entered the ice and had our first test station during which
we deployed the CTD twice, the TM Rosette once and the in situ pumps.
Tomorrow, we shall run some of the other systems including the
incubators and perhaps MOCHNESS while we transit to the study area.

We also restabilized the after deck by repositioning the three vans
and the winch which were moved about by the high seas. The MLML van is
damaged, but probably can be rebuilt during this cruise. All of the
MLML equipment has been salvaged with only the computer keyboard, so
far, a loss. The gamma counter in Cafe Thorium may have been trashed,
but according to David Hirschberg, there is another one aboard they can
use, although it's not as good for their needs.

We continue to require ice images since we shall be moving about in
the ice for the rest of the cruise.
