News from Jon Alberts on the Revelle sailing

All,

Here is a brief update on the port call and the most recent
news from Dr. Tim Cowles aboard the R/V REVELLE.

The ship arrived in Lyttelton, New Zealand, on October 14, 1997 after a
good crossing from Honolulu. The ship went directly to the fuel pier,
then shifted over to her berth late in the day on Tuesday.

On October 15th we began the off-load and on-load of scientific cargo
in preparation for REVELLE/JGOFS Survey I. It was a very busy week
loading and setting up of the labs, the incubators, and the deck
equipment.
The OSU SEASOAR Van and Winch, WHOI's Cafe Thorium, OSU's traction winch
and mooring gear, MLML's (2) winches, the TRACE METAL ROSETTE, MOCNESS,
and MLML's lab van along with each science groups lab supplies and
equipment brought, the total cargo on-load to approx 130,000 lbs.

The port call went very well, with tremendous cooperation and effort
by all involved. I would like to recognize the efforts of the REVELLE's
Captain, Officers, and Crew, Scripps personnel, Ch Sci. Tim Cowles,
USAP/ASA Office and Staff, the entire scientific party, along with great
support from the ship's agent, and local trades-people. The ship sailed
on schedule at 1600 hrs local, October 20, 1997.

The scientific party on board at sailing was:

Dr. Tim Cowles, OSU, Chief Scientist
Stacey Morgan
Robert Williams
Calvin Mordy
Mark Cook
Mark Abbott
Jim Richman
Dennis Root
Catherine Goyet
Thomas Kirchlechner
Kenneth Coale

Sara Tanner
Lary Ball
Glenn Crossin
Sue Vink
Kendra McDonough
Valerie Franck
Sarah Stillman
Jack Barth

Robert O'Malley
Marc Willis
Linda Fayler
Chris Wingard
Michael Landry
Susan Brown
Karen Casciotti
Alejandro Gonzalez
Elizabeth Degler
Xiarong Zhu

John Meadows

As of 1500/23 October GMT, the REVELLE was coming up on their
first long (24hrs) station in position Lat. 57-00 S and Long.
170-00 W. Wind was 30-35 kts, with a 15' Sea.

After a year of planning it was good to get the first
cruise underway.

Regards,
Jon Alberts

Followed closely by a message from Bob Knox, adding:

I would only add to this that Jon Alberts himself deserves a hefty
share of credit for both organization and personal hard work during the
port call. Since he was too modest to say this directly in the
message, I'm saying it here.
