R/V Revelle Sails! All, The JGOFS Southern Ocean Process I cruise aboard the R/V ROGER REVELLE is underway! She sailed at noon on Dec 2, (local New Zealand time) with Dr. Richard Barber and a full compliment of scientists. It was a very busy week with the loading of scientific supplies, modifications to the winch set up, lab spaces, incubators, and the replacement Trace Metal Rosette. Kenneth Coale, Craig Hunter, and Steve Fitzwater from MLML deserve special recognition for their outstanding efforts in the assemble of a new TM Rosette, with such short notice. In addition, the members of Scripps, Dr. Bob Knox, Capt Tom Althouse, Woody Sutherland, and the Master and crew of the REVELLE, put in long hours and great effort into improving the ship's systems to meet the demands of the ambitious JGOFS project. Dr. Barber informed me on sailing that the science party was: " in great spirits, full of energy, and anxious as hell to get to sea." He also remarked that he has never sailed so well prepared.
