This "readme" file pertains to the CTD data taken during R/V Roger Revelle Cruise
KIWI08, 8 January - 8 February 1998.

Dr. Kenneth H. Coale of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (coale@mlml.calstate.edu)
was the chief scientist during this leg. This cruise was the second survey leg on the
R/V Roger Revelle during the U.S. JGOFS program in the Southern Ocean (AESOPS).
The Revelle legs focused on the Polar Front region and complemented several AESOPS
cruises on board the R/V Nathaniel Palmer which focused on the Ross Sea.

Several casts were also made with with a trace metal clean rosette equipped with a
SeaCat CTD on this leg. These data were calibrated separately as this system was not
designed to produce hydrographic data of "WOCE quality". These trace metal rosette data
have been submitted to the U.S. JGOFS data base as separate files.

TRACE METAL CASTS CTD CALIBRATION
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the setup, processing and calibation information for the Trace Metal Rosette CTD
for cruise RR08.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE
------------------------------------------------------------------------
All of the casts made with the TM Rosette CTD were mostly within the high
salinity gradient surface region. Because of the slow time constant response
of the SeaCat CTD, the conductivity data are quite noisy. No effort has been made
to clean up this data as it would basicly have made the profile worthless. Therefore,
the TM Rosette CTD data reported here has been calibrated for conductivity
difference between the bottles, but otherwise are basicly "raw" data which might be at
least of some use in identifying the conductivity(salinity) gradients in the upper layer.

Conductivity Sensor 2216:

To correct the CTD conductivities the
following correction is used:

Cor Sal = Obs Sal - Sal Cor

Conductivity STDEV= 0.01 MEAN= -0.01
Salinity STDEV= 0.01 MEAN= -0.01

Therefore, a correction of .01 was applied to the shipboard
Conductivities and Salinities.
and Salinities.

The reported Conductivities and Salinities are good to +/- .01.
