U.S. JGOFS Arabian Sea
Mesozooplankton Carbon biomass from bongo tows
U.S. JGOFS Data Management Office
November 01, 2002
Wishner/Gowing and Mike Roman sampled for zooplankton Carbon
biomass analysis from the same bongo tows (same events), on
Arabian Sea cruises ttn-043, 045 and 050. For these events,
the single bongo deployment used two 2 different net sizes:
335um and 153um. Wishner/Gowing present data for both nets;
Mike Roman only presents data for the 153um. Thus there are
two sets of carbon data for the 153um net. Mike Roman's data
are direct measurements of carbon. Wisher/Gowing directly
measure the dry weight and use a conversion factor to
indirectly estimate zooplankton carbon (Wisher/Gowing protocols).
The 2 types of estimates are fairly close - for ttn-050, sta N2,
Wisher/Gowing obtain a total of 212.8 and Roman reports a total
of 235.7.
Mike Roman's Bongo data is from the 153um net - the same size
as the MOCNESS nets. The 335um nets were included because they
were used in some older studies and investigators wanted to
compare the JGOFS data to work done 20 years previous.
